An Imperfect Beginning and the Burning Desire
My entrepreneurial journey began with an imperfect start. At 35, I hail from Kedah. After graduating from secondary school, instead of stepping into an office, I diligently followed my father to learn the trade of car repair. At that time, my monthly salary was a mere RM1200. This life, where I could see the end from the beginning, left a deep feeling of discontent in my heart.
It wasn't until one day, while visiting a market, that I ran into an old friend who was running a stall. He told me he could make between RM500 and RM1000 in daily revenue! This massive difference jolted me awake. I have an inherent "stubborn" nature; since I was unwilling to accept mediocrity, I was determined to change my circumstances. I made up my mind: I would not settle for that meager salary; I must go out and "make a name for myself"!
Driven by this ambition, I resolutely started my life as a hawker, initially selling kitchenware. Relying on my ethos of "what I say I will do, I must do," the start was smooth, and I saw both money and hope. However, the good times didn't last. The arrival of the "Mask Era" in 2020 meant we couldn't go out to do business, and my income instantly dried up.
Just as I was lost and disheartened, fate opened a window for me. An old master craftsman I had known for a long time in Ipoh wished to pass on his 40 years of perfected soya bean milk (dou jiang) expertise to a young person. I was fortunate to receive this opportunity and became his apprentice. From selecting the finest beans and precise grinding to controlling the heat for boiling, the master personally taught me the true essence of making great soya milk.
In 2022, armed with this expertise, I restarted my business around the Perak area. I used my small Myvi to sell soya milk by the roadside in busy areas. Business was surprisingly good, and I quickly upgraded from my personal car to our first "Big Soya" food truck. By 2023, we boldly expanded our business map to the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor), with our fleet rapidly increasing from one truck to an astonishing 20!
However, the thrill of victory led me to make the biggest mistake of my life: to grow quickly, I decided to partner up and establish a company in 2024. This error came at a painful cost, as I lost the first bucket of gold I had worked so hard to accumulate over the years.
After falling, I didn't stay down; instead, I reflected deeply. From this mistake, I learned that our soya bean business could also involve wholesale! We could supply to restaurants, Cafes, central kitchens, and confinement centers. We were not just limited to retail food trucks.
In 2025, we restructured our company and factory operations. The current Big Soya has been reborn, with our business now covering both the Klang Valley food truck retail market and the wholesale distribution of our premium soya bean products to catering partners across the entire Klang Valley.
To reach where I am today, I am most grateful to the master in Ipoh who generously shared his knowledge. He passed on not just the technique of making soya milk, but also a dedication to traditional taste and the spirit of craftsmanship. It is his trust and legacy that built today's "Big Soya."
Finally, I want to use this quote to encourage all friends who are pursuing their dreams and fighting hard:
"The road to success is not crowded, because few people persist."
